Week 8: Tools for enhancing learning

This week we have been given a great list of test makers that I am looking forward to trying out.

Besides HotPotatoes, I have used the following quiz generators that I can recommend:

ESL Videos – teachers open an account, embed a YouTube video and create a multiple choice quiz. After the quiz is done, you can copy the embed code of the quiz and paste it into your blog, wiki or website. Otherwise, you can leave the quiz on the ESL Video website.

Scroll down to do my latest video listening quiz: All Summer Long by Kid Rock. In this quiz students are given a list of three synoynms to choose from.

Shakira’s Waka Waka is also a quiz on synonyms, while Mungo Jerry’s Summertime and Robbie Williams’s How do you rate the morning sun is a quiz for practising confusing words – homophones.

While listening to Mika’s Rain students students can practise phrasal words.

  1. Dear Arjana,

Thank you so much for sharing the ESL Videos. I found them very motivating. I followed your steps and also watched the online instructions and created my own quiz.

I think that these kind of quizzes where students can watch a video and listen to the song are very effective, because the students will better learn the vocabulary and remember it longer. It is much easier this way and more fun. Our students spend all their free time listening to music, they will enjoy learning from their favorite hobby 'listening to music'

Who says NO to music? I think that even the students who hate quizzes will take action and work!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I haven't visited ESL Videos before and now I am so happy to create lessons from there!

Not to forget: the song choice and the multiple choice questions were very carefully chosen.

    Yours,
    Luiza

  3. Dear Arjana,

You can see my video on my blog! It is a short quiz for the moment but I can develop it further.

  4. Dear Arjana ,

I wanted to create something on ESL videos , but I got stuck when asked :
    "REQUIRED >> Thumbnail Image:
50K max file size. Displays at 100px max width and/or 100px max height.
Note: If creating a quiz with a YouTube video, use the thumbnail image for this video that was generated by YouTube -- save it to your desktop and upload it here."

What should I do at that point ?

  5. Dear Arjana,

I have solved the problem - meaning I have become an autonomous learner !. Thank you for sharing great ways to enhance our students' learning !

  6. Dear Arjana,

Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful quizz generator. I am among those who thought such things could create only super teachers (once Arbi said). It can't be true I will be able to create them myself.
    Thanks a lot again.

    Yours,

    Victoria

  7. Dear Cami,

Your comment gave me another thought. We are becoming autonomous teachers. I mean with all this baggage of knowledge we can do in our teaching without textbooks or someone else resources. Having the Internet and Web 2.0 tools we can create any resources ourselves or almost any :)

    Yours,
    Victoria

  8. Dear Cami and Victoria,

At first I was sorry I wasn't online to give you a hand with the thumbnails, but then, as you both say, this is the right way to learn not only for us, the teachers, but also for our students.

I have recently read a powerful post by Doug Johnson of The Blue Skunk Blog on how to create empowered learners by being LESS helpful. I highly recommend reading this post:

Thank you very much for your kind words:-)

  9. Dear Arjana,

I cannot find words to describe how great a teacher you are! Always full of interesting ideas and suggestions! What's more, you are ready to help anybody who needs help.

I got inspired with your video song lessons, but I have not gone as far as Cami and Victoria to create my own ESL video quiz yet. I've done the first steps: signed up and looked at some of the interesting quizzes. But I'm sure to try it by all means. Your students are lucky to have such a creative teacher.

    Best

  10. Dear Arjana,

You're an angel! Thank you so much for sharing with us this wonderful site. I'm a fan of using music in my lessons. This site will enable me to use video and have fun with my students online.
I tried your Waka Waka quiz and I enjoyed listening and doing the listening tasks.

    Regards,
    Arbi
